Imagine looking at a photo of an astronaut riding a horse on the moon, or a purple cat flying through the clouds. A few years ago, you would know immediately that these were paintings. Today, computers can create photos that look incredibly real. We call these computer-made pictures 'synthetic media'.
What is Synthetic Imagery?
Synthetic images are pictures created from scratch by artificial intelligence models. Instead of using a camera to capture light from the real world, the AI model uses mathematics to predict what pixels should look like based on thousands of real photos it studied.
Because these models are just guessing what pixels look like, they often make mistakes in details that humans naturally understand, like the number of fingers on a hand, or how light reflects in someone's eyes.
How to Spot AI-Generated Pictures
To identify synthetic pictures, look closely at the background. AI models often make backgrounds blurry or warp lines (like fence posts or window frames).
Next, check symmetrical details. Look at earrings (are they matching?), glasses frames (do they align correctly?), and eyes (do the pupils look round and have identical reflections?). Looking closely at these fine elements is how you train your mind to spot the difference.
